Abstract

As bactérias são procariotas que pertencem ao domínio Bacteria e apresentam três formas básicas: esférica, cilíndrica e helicoidal. As células podem associar-se, formando arranjos característicos de alguns géneros bacterianos. A parede celular, além de conferir forma às bactérias, é responsável pela diferenciação entre bactérias Gram-positivo e Gram-negativo. Além disso, é um alvo preferencial para a atuação de alguns antibióticos. As bactérias patogénicas para o Homem obtêm a sua energia pelo catabolismo de diferentes tipos de nutrientes. Esta energia é utilizada, por exemplo, para a mobilidade bacteriana e para a síntese de macromoléculas. O catabolismo dos açúcares (pentoses e hexoses) ocorre essencialmente através das vias de Embden-Meyerof-Parnas, das pentoses-fosfato e de Entner-Doudoroff. O NADH e o NADPH produzidos nestes processos têm de ser reoxidados a NAD+ e a NADP+ para que a catabolização se processe continuamente. Isto é feito através da fermentação, da respiração aeróbica ou anaeróbica, processos em que há diferentes tipos de aceitadores finais dos eletrões e protões. A fermentação dos açúcares produz ácidos orgânicos e álcoois que permitem a identificação bacteriana ao nível da espécie. O crescimento microbiano depende ainda de múltiplos fatores ambientais onde se incluem a quantidade de água disponível, a temperatura, o pH, a tensão de oxigénio e pressão. O material genómico bacteriano é constituído por 1-.2 cromossomas e, acessoriamente, por plasmídeos. Estes podem conter prófagos, transposões, integrões e ilhas de patogenicidade que são responsáveis pela expressão de fatores de virulência, resistência a antibióticos e novas capacidades metabólicas. As bactérias adaptam-se facilmente ao meio em que vivem num processo evolutivo que envolve a aquisição e assimilação de mutações e/ou transferência de ADN entre bactérias por um dos seguintes processos: transformação, transdução e conjugação.
