/ABSTRACT - The objective is to study a set of techniques in irrigated agriculture that contribute to improve drainage of the Vertisol soils, protecting them against salinity. Discussed results were obtained by monitoring an experiment field with Barros clay soils in Outeiro (Ferreira do Alentejo). A basic drainage system was built based on perforated plastic pipe drains, complemented with three experiment modalities: no further soil deep loosening; subsoiling; mole drains. A supplementary modality was later established consisting on mole drains opening directly into a drainage channel, without basic drainage network. The experiment field was irrigated With poor quality water fi'om the neighbor Canhestros River (C3Sl) and salt contents evolution was monitored within the soil profile and in the drainage water, as compared to soil salinity initial status, which resulted from several years of cereal rainfed cropping. Important salt increase was observed which is due to poor drainage and rain scarcity during the experiment.
