Abstract

The understanding of support provided by relatives with cancer history becomes relevant because of the prevalence of family history of cancer amongst the patients. In this study we aim to deepen the knowledge about the type of social support sought and received; and understand the influence of a family history of cancer in the patient‘s oncologic experience. This qualitative and exploratory study focuses on a 10 cancer patients sample, subjected to interview. The results demonstrate that family and community members are the most sought source of support and that informational support is the most sought kind, followed by emotional support. It was found that a family history of cancer influences the patient‘s cancer experience; and there was a greater influence of family cancer history in participants that were diagnosed with cancer less than a year ago.
