Abstract

Mas as ninhadas HOM foram também mais homogéneas aos 21 dias (CV=17,05±1,34% vs 25,78±1,31% HET, P=0,01); ### Effects of uniformity of birth weight on colostrum intake, mortality and growth of piglets ABSTRACT: This study aimed to compare colostrum intake and postnatal mortality and growth in litters of uniform or heterogeneous birth weight. The study involved 52 sows (Large White x Landrace). At the end of concomitant farrowings, piglets were weighed and allotted to litter group uniform (U) or heterogeneous (Control, C) of 12 piglets and allowed to suckle. At this time, the mean intra-litter coefficients of variation (CV, %) in birth weight were 9.3±0.8 U and 27.8±0.8 C (P<0.001). Piglets were re-weighed 24 h and 21d later. Mean colostrum intake / piglet /litter was similar 416±14 (U) and 395±13 g (C) (P = 0.23), but was less variable in U litters (CV=22.1 vs 36.0%, P =0.01). Mortality up to 21 d of age was lower in U litters (6.4 vs 11.9%, P = 0.03). Results indicate that colostrum intake is less variable and mortality is lower among piglets from litters of uniform birth weight. At 21 days the weight gain of the litters was similar 68963±1922g U e 66792±1883g C (P=0,31). But U litters were also more homogeneous at 21 days (CV=17,05±1,34% vs 25,78±1,31% C, P=0,01).
