Intoxicação por metais pesados em aves domésticas

Intoxicação por metais pesados em aves domésticas

Abstract

IN PET BIRDS Abstract: The heavy metal poisoning in birds is already widely known by veterinarians and bird owners. These metals are often found in the environment of pet birds and also in wild birds. Clinical signs of birds intoxicated by heavy metals are often nonspecific, which frequently complicates the diagnosis. For a complementary diagnose we can use radiographs, biochemical and hematological determinations, and evaluation of heavy metals in the bloodstream, which is the only way to reach a definitive diagnosis, confirming the poisoning. Once diagnosed, treatment should prevent exposure to toxic, through its elimination to the digestive tract, administration of chelating drugs and provide symptomatic and supportive care. In this internship report we initially review the literature on the matter, and present and discuss a few clinical cases of poisoning by heavy metals in birds.
