Abstract

The role of migratory flows in fertility forecasts Abstract :In a context of low fertility in Europe in general, and Southern Europe in particular, broad economic recession and financial crisis, recent change from positive to negative net migration in Portugal, together with natural balances increasingly negative, it becomes essential the evaluation and prediction of migration contribution in our demographic future, particularly in the evolution of the number of births, which affects the growth and aging population. We characterized the births, fertility, emigration and immigration trends, in Portuguese society, in order to explain the differences in fertility behaviour of immigrants and emigrants, given the Portuguese population. We used logistic regression models, to identified distinct behaviours of immigrant women and emigrant women, with intention to have children, compared with Portuguese women resident in the country. Finally, general additive models were used to estimate fertility rate patterns, separately for Portuguese and foreign women, for the period 2013-2015, for Portugal. In accordance with the results obtained, the maintenance of declining immigration and increasing emigration, recently observed in Portugal, it is expected further demographic decline and an increased ageing of the Portuguese society.
