Problemática: A vivência de uma depressão provoca comprometimento social, risco de morte aumentado, recurso frequente aos serviços de saúde. Este facto sugere competências para ajudar esta população. Objetivo: Descrever o processo de desenvolvimento de competências na área de enfermagem de saúde mental e psiquiatria, ao nível da avaliação diagnóstica e de intervenção. Metodologia: reunir população com características da problemática e sob supervisão clínica e uma prática reflexiva realizar avaliações diagnósticas e intervenções consequentes à avaliação desenvolvida a partir de indicadores sustentados na literatura de referência. Resultados: As competências desenvolvidas facilitaram mudanças de comportamento na população-alvo ao nível da autoestima, sono, desempenho de papéis, ideação suicida, percepção de si, pensamento e nível de consciência. Conclusões: A mobilização de conhecimentos, o conhecimento próximo do utente com uma recolha sistemática de informação, as atitudes de ajuda, habilidades adequadas, uma prática reflexiva e uma supervisão atenta podem ser os motores de uma prática clínica efetiva; ### ABSTRAT: Problem: The experiencing of a depression causes social impairment, risk of death increased, frequent use of health services. This suggests skills to help this population. Objective: To describe the process of development of skills in the area of mental health and psychiatric nursing, at the level of diagnostic evaluation and intervention. Methodology: Gather a population with characteristics of the problem and under clinical supervision and a reflective practice develop diagnostic evaluations and interventions consequent with the evaluation developed from indicators supported by the reference literature. Results: The skills developed facilitated behavioral changes in the target population in terms of self-esteem, sleep, role playing, suicidal ideation, self-perception, thought and level of consciousness. Conclusions: The mobilization of knowledge, the close knowledge of the patient with a systematic gathering of information, the help attitudes, right skills, a reflective practice and an attentive supervision can be lead an effective clinical practice.
