Avaliação da adaptação da espécie Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni às condições mediterrânicas

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to evaluate the adaptation of Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bertoni to the Mediterranean conditions that characterize the central Alentejo (Herdade da Mitra, Évora). The development and growth of 25 randomly chosen stevia specimens were observed from September 2012 to August 2013. The germination of stevia seeds was observed in a controlled environment at the following temperatures (20, 25 and 30 ºC), as well as the influence of the height of cut plants (1, 5 e 10 cm). Stevia plants presented best growth results at temperatures of 15 to 30 ºC, and there was reduced to no vegetative activity in the coldest period during which average temperatures were below 8 ºC. The yield of dry weight obtained for leaves was 46,2 g and for branches it was 40,2 g. The best germination rate occurred at 25 ºC, and there were no significant differences associated with the height of cut plants.
