Representações do suicídio no Alentejo

Abstract

As implicações destes resultados são discutidas em termos das suas implicações para a compreensão do suicídio e desenvolvimento de programas de prevenção deste fenómeno psicossocial; ### Abstract: Representations of Suicide in Alentejo It is estimated that about one thousand suicides can occur each year in Portugal, being the suicide rates in Alentejo much higher than in other regions. While it is important to know the social and cultural context where the phenomenon occurs and acquires meaning, the present study seeks to capture the semantic fields associated with suicide in Alentejo and to understand whether people’s perception is modelled by education level, employment status, religion and/or contact with someone who has committed suicide. For this 271 adults, living in districts of Portalegre, Évora and Beja were confronted with stimuli: Suicide makes me think of...; Suicides makes me feel...; People who commit suicide.... From the data collected, submitted to a factorial analysis of correspondence, it is concluded that alentejanos have a suicide representation associated with psychological distress, and strong negative emotions (e.g. despair, suffering). Regarding the image people have in concerns to suicide, alentejanos differ between courage and selfishness. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of their implications for the understanding of suicide and the development of prevention programs of this psychosocial phenomenon.
