El intermedio hispánico de Leopoldo Marechal

Abstract

This article deals with Marechal's relationship with Spanish literature, with special emphasis on two travels to Spain: in 1926 and 1948. In the first of them, his vision of peninsular culture is influenced by avant-garde poetics. In the avant-garde controversy with La gaceta literaria española, it is proposed that Marechal may be the collaborative author of the article under the pseudonym of Ortelli y Gasset. Starting in the 1930s, Marechal rediscovered classical literature from Berceo to Cervantes. His perception of Spain is related to conservative and Catholic theories about Hispanidad. Although Marechal never formally spoke in favor of Franco's cause during the Spanish Civil War, his ideological approaches to the Hispanic tradition bring him closer to Spanish nationalist writers. In 1948 he made a second trip to Spain. There he resumes contacts and meets young writers. In the following years, with other life circumstances, Marechal loses interest in the contemporary Spanish literary field, although he continues to appreciate its classical tradition. Between 1931 and 1950, approximately, one can speak, therefore, of a «Hispanic interval» in the intellectual evolution of Marechal.
