Economía del turismo de salud: caso de Colombia

Abstract

El turismo de salud es un sector emergente que combina procedimientos médicos tradicionales y alternativos con experiencias turísticas de ocio, cultura, tanto en el área rural como urbana. Este sector se presenta como alternativa en la generación de ingresos para localidades de diferentes latitudes que buscan atraer a una creciente población de pacientes nacionales en el extranjero o extranjero que demandan servicios médicos de alta calidad y/o menores precios debido a limitaciones económicas y/o de oferta en sus países de origen. En ese sentido Sloan (2013) establece que los demandantes de servicios médicos tanto nacionales como internacionales buscan mejorar su utilidad de salud, entendido como periodos consecutivos de goce y disfrute de una salud optima que permita realizar actividades tanto productivas como de ocio, encontrándose dispuestos a asumir elevados costos cuando su condición de salud se ve deteriorado. Sin embargo, la demanda de servicios de salud (como cualquier demanda de servicios) se encuentra sujeta a restricciones presupuestarias de los individuos que limita sus opciones y por ende la calidad en los servicios de salud escogidos.
