I 'progymnasmata' nelle 'Etymologiae' di Isidoro

Abstract

The paper aims to analyze the presence of the ‘preliminary exercises’ ('progymnasmata') in the 'Etymologiae' of Isidore of Seville. The purpose of the investigation is twofold: firstly, to ascertain how many and which 'progymnasmata' are effectively present in the work, trying to reconstruct the nature and the features of the source (or sources) used by Isidore; and secondly, to describe the modalities through which Isidore uses, ‘metabolizes’ and transforms the original material, in order to define his role and importance in the history of 'progymnasmata' in the Latin world.
