Abstract

La lingua Zande fa parte della famiglia linguistica del Niger-Congo, in particolare del ramo Adamawa-Ubang, ed è parlata dal popolo degli Zande (anche noti come Azande, Asande o Niam-Niam), un popolo dell'Africa centrale. La maggior parte della popolazione vive nella parte settentrionale della Repubblica del Congo, nel Sud-ovest del Sudan e nella Repubblica Centrafricana. Il materiale raccolto nel vocabolario è di origine molteplice. Vi sono confluiti i materiali raccolti durante la lunga presenza missionaria dell'autore nel Sudan meridionale, e la ricca fraseologia presente mostra la dimensione delle indagini dell'autore, che si è servito anche di fonti scritte, sia traduzioni in zande di testi religiosi che edizioni di testi zande raccolti da vari studiosi. L'autore ha utilizzato anche vocabolari già esistenti, ed il risultato è il più completo e ricco vocabolario zande per ora esistente.
