La nascita dello gnosticismo

Abstract

Lo gnosticismo nasce nel clima intellettuale e spirituale di Alessandria fra II e III sec. d.C., nel periodo in cui la cultura greca dimostra la sua potenziale universalità. Il ritrovamento a Nag Hammadi di 52 scritti gnostici, fra cui 40 prima ignoti, consente di precisare il quadro del pensiero gnostico, altrimenti ricavabile soprattutto da fonti avverse. La gnosi postula l’identità divina di conoscente, conosciuto e mezzo di conoscenza: non è perciò una filosofia, ma una conoscenza religiosa, che esprime l’anelito dell’uomo a tornare all’Essere Supremo da cui proviene. La gnosi considera qundi negativamente il mondo come un esilio, dal quale l’uomo desidera fuggire. Questo elemento permette di riconoscere fra gli elementi caratteristici delle origini del pensiero gnostico lo scontento e la rivolta contro il mondo.
