Abstract

Michael Ondaatje attraverso la sua opera “The English Patient” indaga la complessa situazione della realtà coloniali e post-coloniali, alle quali lui stesso appartiene essendo nato in Sri Lanka. Il romanzo diventa metafora del periodo coloniale offrendo come modelli quello canadese e indiano e proponendo slittamenti temporali e di prospettiva che coinvolgono molti paesi colonizzatori e colonizzati. Lo scrittore coglie anche l’aspetto culturale e linguistico creato dalla dipendenza coloniale e fa emergere con amara ironia i risultati.
