Abstract

I documenti cartografici storici entrano spesso in applicazioni a carattere multidisciplinare quale strumenti essenziali per lo studio delle dinamiche territoriali o degli assetti urbani nel tempo. Risulta quindi indispensabile comprendere la qualità metrica di tali documenti, per conoscere quanto affidabile sia l’informazione in essi contenuta. A tale scopo possono dare una risposta i moderni strumenti della Geomatica, in quanto consentono il “recupero digitale” della cartografia storica, mediante acquisizione, analisi metrica e varie ulteriori elaborazioni in ambiente digitale. Nell’articolo1 viene preso in esame il processo di analisi metrica, evidenziando mediante diagramma di flusso lo svolgimento delle sue tre fasi principali. Una volta appurato il livello di qualità metrica da attribuire alla carta, è possibile, mediante un processo di georeferenziazione, assegnare nuovamente un contenuto metrico alla carta storica digitalizzata, e aprire in tal modo un ampio spettro di analisi ulteriori, anche in altri campi d’indagine. Historical cartographic documents are often part of interdisciplinary applications, being essential instruments to study territorial dynamics or urban development. Therefore, there is the need to assess the metric quality of these documents and to understand the level of reliability of the information they record. The modern geomatic instruments can help, allowing a “digital recovery” of ancient cartography, by means of acquisition, metric analysis, and other digital elaborations. In the paper the metric analysis process is taken into account; three basic steps are highlighted by means of flow chart. Once assessed the metric quality level of the map, a georeferencing step can give a metric content to the digitalized historical map. On this basis, many other kinds of analysis are allowed.
