Abstract

This paper reflects on the specific potential of the solidarity economy to counter the effects of local disintegration processes, through the analysis of a concrete initiative that took place in the region of Portalegre, in Portugal – AJUDADA. This was a spontaneous grassroots initiative that materialised as an international event, promoted by civil society and anchored in the concepts of a broader international movement, Transition Network, which proposes a structural transformation of the existing development paradigm. Local authorities were involved in different stages of the preparation and follow-up but such involvement was marked by its lowprofile and avoidance of prominence. The analysis of the characteristics of this initiative constitutes a useful source of inspiration to identify specific elements of the solidarity economy that possess a structurally distinct potential from the social economy to counter phenomena of social disintegration in a sustainable manner.
