Abstract

The present study examined the concept of citizenship, culture and public space through the Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) which is little known in Portugal. The TO can be an effective way for potentiating public debates about political issues while also helping individuals to consciously engage in society. Furthermore, the Forum Theatre (a subtype of the TO), can also promote social intervention by taking to the theatre’s stage ordinary life situations while also helping individuals to step outside their own reality allowing them to assess their condition clearer from a more distant standpoint. By doing this, individuals can also learn how to do it in relation to the society they live in. Using qualitative research methods, namely a case study of the ValArt TO group, it was possible to closely follow-up the group’s creation and development through a Forum Theatre play “Assim quem vai querer?” which was about gender equality, decision making and choices toward sexual behaviour in adolescence. In addition to that, observations, conversations, group interviews and a field diary were employed to achieve the main aims of the study, which attempted to (i) assess how some of the theoretical contributes from sociology and the theatre can interplay with the TO thorough the ValArt group, and (ii) investigate how individuals can better intervene in society by increasing their consciousness via the TO. In sum, the results suggested that TO it’s a way to enhance public debate about politic questions. Throughout social movements such as the TO, it is possible to reinvent citizenship, one controversial concept in the current situation we live in.
