Abstract

The problem of academic failure tends to remain in the arena of education as a central phenomenon of both academic and political debates .The significant percentage of students who have to repeat their school years legitimises such a situation. Portugal is one of the countries that can be encapsulated in this context. This research scope is exclusively focused on the analysis of school failure trajectories. The study comprehends the academic experience of a sample of 280 youngsters, whose age span varies between 15 and 18 years old. These youngsters are currently attending Education and Training courses comprising dual certification – both academic and professional - and all share at least one school year repetition in the regular education system. This research aimed to perform the study of the variables that underlie these trajectories and, simultaneously, how they affect this population’s future projects. Using the classical sociology of education approach as its theoretical starting point the present study took youth as its key analysis dimension. After many years of research on this subject and so as to what that the set of collected data allowed to conclude, the families’ social class condition remains as the explanatory variable for their children’s unsuccessful school trajectories. These poor academic performances underlie the choice to withdrawal from the mainstream education system and to enroll in less prestigious curricular offerings. Even if discordant with their personal future aspirations, this choice allow these youngsters to obtain the school certification that traditional compulsory education did not provide them
