Abstract

Os mercados financeiros são cada vez mais complexos e sofisticados, e desenvolvem-se a uma velocidade estonteante. Os produtos de hoje, não são os de amanhã, e é necessário ter um nível de conhecimento financeiro elevado e ser capaz de o utilizar, isto é, ser financeiramente letrado, para conseguir fazer face a estas constantes mudanças. Neste contexto, este estudo avalia o nível de conhecimento financeiro dos estudantes universitários no que respeita ao acesso ao crédito, assim como as suas condicionantes. Esta temática foi considerada pelo Banco de Portugal, aquando do inquérito de literacia financeira realizado à população portuguesa em 2010, uma das importantes áreas de actuação neste segmento populacional. O Banco de Portugal vem reforçar a posição da OCDE (Organização para a Cooperação e Desenvolvimento Económico) que considera a capacidade dos indivíduos de recorrer ao crédito de forma eficaz, e gerir as suas finanças pessoais com sucesso, competências fundamentais para a vida. Tendo sido inquiridos 396 estudantes de licenciatura do ISCTE-IUL, considerados como uma amostra dos estudantes universitários, concluiu-se que, relativamente ao crédito, os estudantes possuem baixos níveis de conhecimento financeiro. A área científica do curso frequentado é a característica que mais explica este conhecimento financeiro, sendo os alunos das áreas empresariais os que possuem, em média, um nível de conhecimento mais elevado. Outra das conclusões retiradas deste estudo é que os alunos consideram que possuem um conhecimento mais elevado do que o que realmente acontece. Os estudantes sobreavaliam os seus conhecimentos financeiros, e, segundo os resultados apurados, os das áreas empresariais tendem a fazê-lo mais vezes.

Financial markets are increasingly complex and sophisticated, and are being developed at breakneck speed. The products today are not those of tomorrow, and you must have a high level of financial knowledge and be able to use it, i.e., be financially literate, to cope with these constant changes. In this context, this study aims to assess the level of financial knowledge of college students, about the access to credit, as well as their limitations. This issue was considered by the Bank of Portugal, during the survey of financial literacy held in the Portuguese population in 2010, one of the important areas of action in this population segment. The Bank of Portugal reinforces the position of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) which considers the ability of individuals to use credit effectively, and manage their personal finances successfully, basic skills for life. Having surveyed 396 undergraduate students from ISCTE-IUL, considered as a sample of college students, the results show that their level of financial knowledge, about credit, is low. The scientific area of the course taken is the feature that better explains this financial knowledge and the students from the business area are the ones that have on average a higher level of knowledge. Another conclusion drawn from this study is that students consider they have a higher knowledge than what they actually have. Students overestimate their financial knowledge, and, according to the results obtained in this study, the business area tends to do it more often.
