Abstract

Ao estudar a Literacia Financeira assume-se retratar os conhecimentos financeiros e, consequentemente, conhecer os seus hábitos de gestão do seu dinheiro. A poupança é uma dimensão chave no estudo da Literacia Financeira, pois está directamente associada ao bem-estar financeiro da sociedade. Remetendo para os estudantes universitários, a poupança é essencial não só porque permite criar uma segurança financeira no caso de algo inesperado acontecer e também porque prepara os mesmos para desenvolver as melhores práticas no futuro. Neste contexto, este estudo tem como principal objectivo retratar a Literacia Financeira, na vertente da poupança de estudantes universitários. Para tal, é proposto medir o nível de conhecimento da poupança, conhecer os hábitos de poupança efectiva e identificar os factores determinantes do conhecimento de poupança do estudante universitário. Para desenvolvimento do estudo foi elaborado um questionário composto por questões de inclusão e compreensão financeira, cultura financeira, escolha de produtos financeiros e conhecimento de poupança, para além das questões do perfil do aluno. A amostra do estudo foi constituída por 396 alunos dos 1º e 3º anos de licenciatura do ISCTE-IUL. Os principais resultados obtidos apontam para um nível de conhecimento de poupança dos alunos inadequado. No entanto, relativamente aos factores potencialmente explicativos do conhecimento de poupança, a análise elaborada permite concluir que em todas as dimensões do estudo são encontradas características que influenciam este conhecimento. Também alguns produtos têm um uso mais frequente em função da regularidade da realização de poupanças.

Financial Literacy studies intend to point out financial knowledge, thus, the way people manage their own money. Savings is a key component of studies of Financial Literacy, because it is strictly related to society’s financial welfare. Turning to college students, savings is primordial, not only to deal with an unexpected situation, but also to prepare them to develop the best practices in the future. In this context, the main goal of this study is to depict Financial Literacy, regarding the savings of college students. In order to achieve this, it is proposed to assess the level of knowledge on savings, to know the habits of effective saving, and to identify the main factors on a college student’s savings knowledge. For this study, a survey was conducted, with questions regarding inclusion and financial understanding, financial culture, product choice and savings knowledge, besides each one’s profile questions. The sample comprises 396 students, from the 1st and 3rd year of college degrees of ISCTE-IUL. Results suggest an inadequate knowledge on savings. However, regarding the factors which may explain savings knowledge, from the appropriate analysis, it is understandable that every dimension of this study, meets the explanatory characteristics of knowledge. Several products are more frequent, according to savings regularity.
