Defining intelligibility as a major problem in Durkheim’s realism, this essay analyzes Durkheim’s discursive strategies in support of the sui generis and objective reality of social facts. One particular text – Les Règles de la méthode sociologique (1895) – is the starting point of a discussion that relates the use of metaphors with the search for the utopian-thing. These two major aspects of Durkheim’s work are explored in a specific context – the critical assessment of the idea of a sociological «classic». Attempting to look at the French author from a new perspective, this essay also brings into focus the very conception of sociological theories.
