Capital social: origens e aplicações na sociologia contemporânea

Abstract

Neste artigo examinamos as origens e as definições do conceito de capital social nas obras de Bourdieu, Loury e Coleman, entre outros, e distinguimos quatro fontes de capital social, cujas dinâmicas exploramos. As aplicações do conceito na bibliografia sociológica sublinham o seu papel no controlo social, no apoio familiar e nos benefícios mediados por redes extrafamiliares. Apresentamos exemplos de cada uma destas funções positivas. As consequências negativas do mesmo processo merecem também atenção, procurando-se oferecer uma imagem equilibrada das forças em jogo, sendo analisadas e ilustradas com exemplos relevantes quatro dessas consequências. Trabalhos recentes sobre o capital social alargaram o âmbito do conceito, inicialmente definido como um recurso individual, para designar uma característica de comunidades e mesmo de nações. Nas secções finais do artigo descrevemos este alargamento conceptual e examinamos as suas limitações. Sustentamos que o capital social, designação estenográfica das consequências positivas da sociabilidade, ocupa um lugar bem definido na teoria sociológica; contudo, extensões excessivas do conceito podem pôr em perigo o seu valor heurístico.
