Sucesso escolar: Abordagem de business analytics

Abstract

A presente dissertação registou algumas limitações.

Education plays a central role in the formation of society, being a crucial indicator for a country's development. In the Portuguese context, the issue of school failure and early school leaving has been widely discussed over the years. Considering the numerous investigations carried out on school success in Portugal, it is possible to understand that there are some gaps when it comes to analyzing it. So far, many studies have adopted an approach that, although relevant, can be complemented with additional perspectives regarding the statistical models applied. Although there is research that covers the country and uses advanced statistical models, it is important to highlight the need to promote investigations that explore different statistical methodologies, capable of offering new perspectives and enriching the analysis of this topic. This research aims to analyse school success in basic education in the public system in Portugal, based on the use of Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) and data collected from the Direção Geral de Estatísticas da Educação e Ciência. The data used to achieve the defined objectives covers the period between 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 and was disaggregated by school, compiling various indicators for evaluating school success. The SOM outputs made it possible to group the different schools by region in relation to their level of school success, as well as making it possible to understand which variables most influence school success. This dissertation registered some limitations. However, it offers relevant contributions to the analysis of school success, especially with regard to the application of unsupervised models.
