The analysis of changes in auction houses: A case study into a Portuguese auction house

Abstract

The aim of the project thesis is to emphasise on increasing the identity of the Portuguese auction market using the blueprint from world-class auction houses thriving in the art market. This project-thesis will provide a comprehensive look at the role of an auction house and the functions necessary to develop a successful identity. I will use first-hand analysis garnered through an internship at a top Portuguese auction house as a case study, to better understand the internal structure entailing its problems and solutions. The main objective will be to provide elements that could potentially help improve the main auction house based in Portugal, allowing growth within the international art market in terms of profitability, garnering attention and establishing itself a key actor in the greater art ecosystem.
