Abstract

This study explores the relationship between student motivation, based on Self-Determination Theory, and the adoption of different types of learning goals, as described in Achievement Goal Theory, seeking to verify the effects that more traditional or more alternative assessment typologies have on this relationship. Previous research indicates that intrinsic motivation is positively associated with approach mastery goals, while extrinsic motivation correlates positively with avoidance performance goals, and that both are associated with assessment. Specifically, this study sought to examine the potential moderating role of different types of assessment in the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and the goals of approach mastery and avoidance performance, and to this end eight research hypotheses were formulated. The research involved 103 higher education students in Portugal, using an online questionnaire, and six simple linear regression models were tested using PROCESS macro for IBM-SPSS Statistics. The results point to the existence of a more complex relationship between motivation and goals than the literature describes, as well as the importance of studying amotivation, as well as the existence of relationships between these variables and self-efficacy. The data also point to possible effects of assessment on students' motivations and goals, suggesting that the influence of assessment could be of particular interest for future studies and for the development of tools and programmes that create more inclusive educational environments and maximise student learning.
