Abstract

Children and youth in foster care maintain contact with their birth family through visits, which can be supervised to assess and support family reunification (e.g., Bullen et al., 2015). However, there is a lack of measures for the assessment of those visits’ quality (e.g., Van Holen et al., 2024). The aim of this study was to develop an observational scale to assess the quality of interaction during contact visits (Parental Responsiveness Scale in Foster Care Visits [PRSFCV]), to be coded in the moment. It included a sample of 20 children and their mothers, aged between 4 and 6 years, and 20 and 41 years, respectively. The quality of mother-child interaction was assessed based on a semi-structured procedure, using the PRS-FCV and the Ainsworth and colleagues’ (1978) Sensitivity and Cooperation Scales. Maternal psychopathology was assessed using the Brief Symptom Inventory, and child mental development was assessed using the Ruth Griffiths Mental Development Scales. As for the results, the PRS-FCV showed excellent interobserver agreement. Higher PRS-FCV scores were strongly associated with maternal sensitivity and cooperation, and a higher maternal education. Although exploratory, the results of this study may contribute to the assessment of contact visits in foster care and assist professionals in decision-making processes.
