Abstract

Health literacy has been gaining ground in the political debate and on the media agenda, and is increasingly seen as a factor that contributes to improving health outcomes. The sustainability of the National Health Service (SNS) is a pressing concern, and its resilience is related to how citizens use it. Health literacy has a direct impact on the use of resources and Portuguese rates are below the European average, associated with a social gradient that accentuates health inequalities. The aim of this research is to assess the contribution of community pharmacies to citizens' health literacy. To this end, we sought on the one hand, to understand the degree of involvement of pharmacists in the subject and, on the other, to collect citizens' impressions of the pharmacist's work. Our research model was therefore designed to give us a multidimensional perspective on the issue of health literacy in the context of pharmaceutical intervention. A mixed methodology was used, with two questionnaire surveys, one aimed at pharmacists, with 394 responses, and the other at citizens, with 112 responses, complemented by an ethnographic study that took place in 7 pharmacies in the Lisbon district. The results show that pharmacists naturally promote health literacy by encouraging positive health behaviors and helping to empower individuals to manage their health. The public recognizes the effort, but the effectiveness of the communication needs to be improved.
