Economia comportamental: Inovação no enquadramento de promoções

Abstract

Promotions play a fundamental role in the retail sector in Portugal, adapting to the needs of the modern consumer. The market has responded to changes in consumer profiles, leading many companies to rethink their low-price strategy and how to present promotions to consumers. This thesis investigates the promotional strategies adopted by the Pingo Doce supermarket chain within the timeframe spanning December 2019 to March 2023. The central aims of this analysis inclues tracking the evolution of these strategies in response to significant historical events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis, while unraveling consumer preferences towards different promotional mechanics. The research underscores Pingo Doce's remarkable adaptability and capacity for innovative promotional strategies. An array of approaches surfaces, encompassing category-specific discounts, future rebates, and inventive initiatives like "Inflation 0," where products were priced at par with the previous year. This highlights the company's agility in calibrating promotional strategies to match economic fluctuations and external circumstances, such as the introduction of hampers during the pandemic. Concomitant to these findings, a study of consumer preferences uncovers nuanced profiles. While certain consumers gravitate towards direct and explicit promotions, such as immediate product discounts, others exhibit a preference for promotions conferring supplementary benefits, like fuel vouchers or VAT-equivalent reductions. Notably, the "Inflation 0" mechanic proves particularly challenging for consumers to assess, underscoring the significance of clarity and simplicity. To summarize, this thesis furnishes an inclusive grasp of Pingo Doce's promotional strategies, foregrounding its adaptability amidst historical flux and persistent pursuit of innovation. This knowledge holds pertinence for marketing practitioners and retailers seeking to optimize promotional strategies within an ever-evolving landscape.
