Abstract

Contemporary multimedia societies are highly complex societies that are marked by transformation and change (their essence) and by the multiplicity of “institutional arenas” (Eisenstadt). They are educational societies, characterised by the unprecedented social centrality assigned to the lifelong education and development of their populations (Enguita). They are information and knowledge societies: societies of the globalisation of communication (which is closely connected with the nature of knowledge, its intensive and competitive use and its presence/penetration in all spheres of life (Lane, Stehr)), of the highspeed development of information and communication technology (ICT), and of technological innovation (Castells). They are reflexive and critical societies, in a permanent state of self-analysis (Beck, Giddens and Lash). They are societies of literacy/literacies.
