Abstract

This dissertation focuses on the study of the impacts of the main determinants of non-performing loans in the Euro Area, providing an update of the literature with more recent data on credit risk. Another goal of this dissertation is to improve the existing literature on credit risk in the Euro Area, with a practical component that helps financial institutions to develop credit risk protection mechanisms. To this aim, several models were estimated, including macroeconomic and bank-specific variables. Using a panel data structure and the GMM method, the credit risk of the banking sector in 15 Euro Zone countries was studied. The sample was composed of 503 banks focusing on the period from 2013 to 2019. The results indicate that an adverse macroeconomic environment is positively related to the increase of non-performing loans. Similarly, a positive relationship is observed between low levels of banking indicators and the increase in the NPL ratio (non-performing loans ratio).
