Habitar Unhos: Do fim do mundo à nova centralidade

Abstract

With the growth of cities, the need for global accessibility for faster access to the capital gradually fragmenting the local accessibilities. An ancient network of paths that connected populations was in some cases disconnected, interrupted, or partially destroyed, and Unhos is no exception. The work takes place in the urban agglomeration of Unhos, on the edge of the council of Loures and in the context of the development of the Parque Várzea e Costeiras de Loures (PVCL) with an inter-municipal character. This dissertation addresses the question of how the urban periphery of Lisbon develops spatially, both on the local scale of former urban agglomerations and in relation to the wider urban network of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML). The intervention strategy is based on a deep analysis in loco, on the principles of ecological design with the place, on cities for people and on the application of the Space Syntax methodology. The physical, biological and cultural attributes of the place were inventoried. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were incorporated into the research process for mapping, inventory, information analysis and cartography production. The proposed solutions for the intervention area are based on the critical reflection of the analysis carried out, trying to propose solutions to the detected problems with the aim of improving the habitability conditions of the urban space. The intervention in Unhos aims to establish an inter-municipal connection, Lisbon-São João da Talha. The PVCL's strategic plan is seen as an opportunity for Unhos to stop being such a segregated place, becoming a new centrality.
