Matosinhos: o novo centro cívico e a estação do Senhor de Matosinhos

Abstract

This work is based on a critical investigation of the territory of Matosinhos - Leça da Palmeira, to understand it as a city that has developed due to its industrial nature, and to draw up a project relevant for the future. Thus, a general intervention strategy is outlined with the purpose of solving the fragilities and weaknesses of the territory shaped by two main industrial areas such as the Port of Leixões and the Galp Refinery. In order to resolve the fracture between the two sides of the Leça river and to unify the two urban areas of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, this strategy is based on three main factors: the waterfront and the natural green system – which was gradually destroyed with the evolution of the city –, the mobility axis – with the extension of the surface metropolitan line to Leça da Palmeira – and the urban voids that lack qualification present in the urban areas. Finally, an architectural project is developed, inserted in the group strategy discourse, and informed by the themes addressed in the research conducted. The design of a new public space – at the current terminus of the surface metropolitan – that closes the front of the Bairro dos Pescadores is proposed: the new Civic centre and the Station of Senhor de Matosinhos. An infrastructure that can enable various programs instead of just a fixed one is designed, to try and solve weaknesses at a city scale – with the extension of the metropolitan line – and at a neighbourhood scale – with an elevated square where there are flexible interior spaces in its use for enjoyment of the community.
