Abstract

In Resolução do Conselho de Ministros nº53-D/2020, it was suggested that schools create peer mentoring programs in order to encourage interpersonal relationships and cooperation between students. Peer mentoring consists of pairing an older student and a younger student, ideally a minimum of two years apart (Karcher, 2007). The main objective of this study was to explore and compare peer mentoring programs being developed in primary and secondary schools in Portugal, situating this analysis in the international knowledge about the construction and effectiveness of programs of this nature. The sample is composed of 9 professionals, 8 female, aged between 40 and 62 years (M = 54.33, SD = 8.124). Using a qualitative methodology, 9 semi-structured narrative interviews were conducted with the reference figures of peer mentoring programs in three Portuguese schools. The results found from this study show that there are common aspects to the programs in the three schools, such as the formulation of goals, the meetings between participants, and the factors that hindered implementation. On the other hand, the training of mentors, the external guidelines, and the criteria for choosing mentors and mentees were aspects that showed variations in the programs present in the study.
