Abstract

Matosinhos is physically and socioeconomically strongly characterized by the presence of large industrial complexes, such as the Port of Leixões or the Galp Refinery, which have left permanent marks on the city’s urban fabric. Therefore, with the constant development and transformation the city has experienced over time, it is impossible to ignore the industry, making it necessary to work with it to mitigate its negative impact on the remaining territory. Therefore, this project addresses not only the impact of the industry on the city of Matosinhos, but also the case of the Marginal de Leça da Palmeira by Álvaro Siza Vieira in its role as a structuring and aggregating element of the urban fabric, deeply influenced by it. The chapters I, II and III, was developed in a group culminating in a strategy of intervention at the scale of the city of Matosinhos, based on a critical analysis of the past but with an eye to the future. The chapter IV, translates into the architectural project with a focus on the territory of Leça da Palmeira in the area of Boa Nova, next to Galp’s old refinery. It is not only about solving territorial problems in this area, but also about preparing the expansion of the urban core of Leça da Palmeira to the area of the now deactivated refinery. The proposal results in the implementation of the new Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR), integrated in the future Polo Tecnológico de Matosinhos of the Universidade do Porto.
