Abstract

The Food and Nutrition Security is a matter dependent on overall policy orientations, in which all aspects are interrelated and that the priority of each is difficult to establish. In this paper we addressed the prospect of prevention of diseases associated with malnutrition, by implementing a balanced diet. Our study took place in Angola, who lived decades of food insecurity as a result of internal armed conflict. Our aim was to characterize a student’s population diet regime (5th, 6th, 7th grades) in five schools in three municipalities of the province of Huila. For its characterization, we applied a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) adapted to the region. We conducted a descriptive and comparative statistical analysis (between urban schools, the county capital, Lubango and suburban schools, municipalities adjacent Chibia and Humpata) based on the data collected from the FFQ using statistical analysis software SPSS v. 18. The results allowed us to identify and characterize diet food of target population, determining the average frequency of consumption and amount consumed for each food, and significant differences were found between the two types of schools, for some groups of foods of the FFQ applied. This prospective study is a contribution to the development of a Food Guide, which can provide a balanced diet based on products yield in the region and the population dietary habits and customs, allowing for a primordial prevention development programme of diseases associated with malnutrition.
