Abstract

The research and project presented aim to think the coastline in order to provide new spaces for permanence, and give new life to an area that nowadays has been neglected for more than 10 years. Regarding the territory, this is characterized by a Fossil Cliff, geological heritage, national agricultural reserve and a city that is threatened by the advance of the sea. The town of Costa da Caparica, once a fishing village, is now densely and disorderly crowded with buildings and deprived of its severely eroded natural landscape. The main objectives of this project and investigation are the redesign of the whole coastline in order to provide again the town with natural spaces, and the implementation of new land occupations. Firstly, the whole dune chain of Costa da Caparica will be reconstructed and the ocean spurs perpendicular to it removed, leaving only the structural ones already contemplated in the municipal studies. Secondly, the reactivation of the light train - Transpraia - from Avenida 1º de Maio to Fonte da Telha, as well as the extension of the line to Trafaria, thus making it a viable and environmentally friendly means of transport, with the added value of connecting the whole coast to the boat at Trafaria. Finally, co-working areas, exhibition rooms, and a set of tourist accommodations will be implemented in order to make the area more dynamic, all incorporated in the new natural landscape recreated in a similar way to the past.
