O abandono escolar: Uma realidade Açoriana

Abstract

The present study justifies itself through the significant number of Azorean children/adolescents that are currently out of the official school system without their minimum grade level, being left to an expected risk of pre-delinquency. To understand the early school abandonment of the Azorean students, de study firstly looks to identify the dynamics that presides the abandonment of most students in the beginning of the second cycle of schooling, through the direct observation of Vila Franca do Campo, where the phenomenon is greatly present. The principal indicators of the present variables are the levels of grade passing and retention of the students, their level of achievement, interest, misbehavior, presence and family socioeconomic conditions and the family participation in schooling. The study analyses the students future perspectives and/or strategies, in other words, until when do they expect to proceed their studies, what profession do they perceive having, at what age do they see themselves initiating a profession. It is expected that the problem resides essentially in the lack of school value transmitted through family and community, the lack of positive role models for local reference, the dysfunctional and inadequate school system that happens in the transition from the first to the second cycle of schooling, the lack of guidance and role models that help students prevent failure and consequential school abandonment.
