Abstract

The conflict between Man and Nature is a controversial topic nowadays. The architect must always keep in mind the search for a balance between the built and the existing landscape, creating a new landscape that has the capacity to be sustainable and prevail for several years. Furthermore, the matter of sustainability inevitably ends up touching on the subject of "Reused Architecture ". This type of intervention pursuits a built element, studies it to understand the essence of the place and only then intervenes, undoing what is unnecessary and redoing what is necessary. The city of Costa da Caparica is made of a vast and rich natural environment and countless cases of unclassified buildings; however, considered to be heritage due to their architecture. Within this vast collection of buildings, it is possible to find abandoned or obsolete cases that require an intervention so that they can be used again. This way, the Alpena Battery is an indicated choice for respecting a balance with nature, despite being an invasive element on the cliff, it managed to find stability and work with its surroundings; in addition, it is a flexible piece in programmatic terms where a careful and thorough intervention allows it to be used again. This manifesto allows not only to enjoy its architectural and spatial richness, but also uses the battery as an object that will rehabilitate the landscape itself, connecting or creating new pathways and landscape, so that there is a greater connection with the city, giving the opportunity to experience the surface of the Fossil Cliff.
