Marvila: autenticidade e contradição

Abstract

Marvila is an old industrial area tucked north and south by two prominent neighborhoods and divided by two railway lines that demarcate the territory and make it quite distinct in different zones. This is a neighborhood strongly marked by not only physical but also socioeconomic barriers. Much like what happens around the world with industrial structures near urban centers in contemporary cities, this area now suffers several changes related to public and private investment and real estate speculation. Recently occupied by creative industries, art galleries and haute cuisine restaurants, this space now faces, among others, the enormous problem of gentrification and consequently a huge loss of what the sociologist Sharon Zukin defines as “autenticitity”
