Arquitetura vernacular: Construir o tempo

Arquitetura vernacular: Construir o tempo

Abstract

The search for the guidelines of architecture history presented in this dissertation have the objective of finding bridges between the past and the present. The study is developed in two complementary parts. The construction of the theoretical foundation and the expression of concepts accepted in this architectural object inserted in Cova do Vapor. The understanding of space, time and permanence introduced by Aldo Rossi in his book, The Architecture of the City; (1982) constituted the basis of theoretical knowledge essential to the thought of the architectural object, and construction of its character. Reading Michelangelo Sabatino’s Pride in Modesty; (2011), allow us to build a temporal bridge on which historical concepts of modernist and vernacular architecture flow. It was possible to confront the two, placing both in the same historical break. Resulting in the definition of the themes of identity and character that boiled in the twentieth-century Europe. A vernacular architecture introduced by Dell Upton in Common Places; (1986) and deconstructed by Amos Rapoport in House Form and Culture; (1969) allowed for an analysis of vernacular architecture found in the Cova do Vapor, formulating as foundations of the project.
