Literacia financeira e empreendedorismo: Análise dos empreendedores portugueses

Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyse the level of financial literacy of Portuguese entrepreneurs and the influence that some characteristics have on these levels. Entrepreneurship is of paramount importance to a country’s economy since it boosts innovation, production, competitivity and job creation. It is thus considered an engine to the economic development. Nonetheless, if the enterprises are not able to overcome the adversities of the first years of activity, the advantages that entrepreneurship might bring will not be long lasting. The closure of so many companies in Portugal can be explained by the economic crisis. Some authors defend that its effects might have been minimized if the population had higher levels of financial literacy, i.e., if people were better able to obtain, comprehend and evaluate relevant and necessary information in order to take decisions considering their likely financial consequences. On the other hand, even if the economic crisis did not hit the country, it would still be likely that a high number of companies would close due to the population’s low levels of financial literacy. Financial literacy is particularly important when talking about entrepreneurship, so that companies can adapt their strategy to their clients’ behaviour and predict cash flow variations. Increasing the levels of financial literacy is one of the goals of public politics because it enhances well-being. An increase on the entrepreneurs’ levels might lead to economic development. Therefore, this reveals the need to invest in financial education programmes in Portugal, which will benefit all individuals.
