Abstract

Reading Aldo Rossi's book "A Scientific Autobiography" (1981) offers the opportunity to recover the importance of the matters related with memory and analogy on architectural thought as well as the contemporary design process. The decoding of the endless set of memories and references underlying Rossi's projects, which constitute his theoretical-practical work base, leads to the subject of typology and types in architecture, particularly addressed in Rafael Moneo's article "On Typology" (1978). In the Portuguese context, the recovery of sensitive issues and the theme of memory by the architects in the post-25 April 1974 period, especially the poetic work of the architect Álvaro Siza, is developed through the reading of Poetic Profession (1988) by Kenneth Frampton. The understanding of the present time, from this and other questions that arise in the postmodern period in Europe (60s, 70s and 80s), later relevant in Portugal, is considered as an operation tool on the contemporary territory, worked in particular in the practical project: the Alenquer village. Serving as a basis for reflection and operation in the present time, Alenquer’s center is the place for the development of Teatro Damião de Góis. The new public equipment aims to take the place of the current village’s auditorium, which does not serve it properly, and is proposed as a fundamental agent to revitalize this territory and try to fight against its progressive abandonment.
