Abstract

Quanto maior for o CA, maior a percentagem de mulheres.

Currently there is a shift in social roles that each gender plays in society, and as a consequence there has been an increasing mobilization by the European Union such as approving laws to promote initiatives that support gender equality. Throughout Europe, academic investigations have emerged that analyse whether a stronger female presence on the Board of Directors (BD) brings benefits to the company. Thus, this research analyses the relation between the presence of women in the BD of the companies listed in the PSI 20 between 2013 and 2016 and the financial indicators of the companies. More specifically: i) describes the presence of women in the BD of companies listed in the Lisbon Stock Exchange and included in the PSI 20; ii) verifies whether the percentage of woman in the BD is similar to that suggested by the EU in the proposed Directive; and iii) investigates the relation between the female presence in the BD and the financial indicators of the companies. The results indicate that the presence of women in the BD is stronger in non-executive positions, and that the percentage (3.4% for executive positions and 8.2% for non-executive positions) is far from that suggested by the EU (40%). The number of females tends to increase with the size of the board. The study also concludes that the companies with the highest percentage of women in the BD are those with the lowest assets, lower indebtedness and higher ROA.
