Abstract

The following dissertation intends to study the relationship between the price index, in Portugal and in the Eurozone, and the Portuguese stock market – the PSI 20. From the fisher theory assumptions until the most recent empirical studies the relationship between these variables have been widely studied, but not always with the same conclusions, varying taking into account mainly the stock market and the time sample. In order to understand how these variables interact in the Portuguese context, between January 1999 and December 2015, this dissertation applies a VAR model to answer several questions around this topic. Does inflation predict the PSI 20 behavior? Does PSI 20 react more to shocks in the changes of inflation in Portugal or in the Eurozone? Is there a long-term effect of inflation in the Portuguese stock market? The empirical results suggest that both consumer price indices have a positive impact on interest rates (3 month Euribor) on the long-term, the Eurozone consumer price index predicts the behavior of the stock market, unlike the Portuguese consumer price index, and that a rise in inflation in Portugal reduces the stock prices less than a similar increase in Eurozone inflation.

A inflação antecipa o comportamento do PSI 20?
