Contrabandos no "concelho mais português de Portugal"

Abstract

In this paper I intend to share some results and emerging questions from my most recent research work towards a PhD on local-level practices and identity processes in the Luso-Spanish border. This article is primarily concerned with the analysis of discourses on smuggling collected in two freguesias (parishes) in the concelho (municipality) of Idanha-a-Nova and with the role played by smuggling in the construction of the latter as a tourist place. Through this analysis I interrogate the idea of conflict between smugglers and the state, which has guided most of the anthropological studies on this subject relating to this border, which has been taken for granted without further debate.
