Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to capture the representations and experiences of single women without children, aged between 31 and 39 years old, living in the city of Lisbon. In light of the theoretical conceptualization developed around this theme, we seek to capture the extent to which these women feel effectively stigmatized and socially discriminated against, due to being unmarried and having no children. Furthermore, we aim to understand how these women´s experiences, arising from different professional paths and social origins, shape their attitudes and strategies towards Stigma. The study is based on a qualitative methodology, with ten semi-directive interviews having been performed. It was possible to see that the women who were interviewed not only consider that Stigma is present in Portuguese society, but also they themselves feel discriminated against, especially by comparison with men sharing the same circumstances. They point out the fact that men are able to have children until later in life as the main cause for this. In general, they also feel that they are subject to social pressure, mainly brought by their family members.
