Abstract

Rua das Gaivotas 6 (Project of Cultural Entrepreneurship) – Model of Programming The city of Lisbon has a significant increase in supply and demand in the area of cultural consumption, especially in those beyond the institutional framework, but there is an ongoing debate about the lack of spaces for creation and presentation. This thesis presents a model of programming designed for the renovated space of Rua das Gaivotas, a space that aims to host projects of cultural and creative nature, with emphasis on emerging manifestations of Portuguese contemporary art, young artists beginning to take their first steps but that find no support in the more institutionalized cultural structures. The space of Rua das Gaivotas (previously designated by the owner, the Town Council, as Escola das Gaivotas) is set in a building that was run down and unoccupied on a prime urban location and that was the subject of a tender for its use for cultural purposes won by the cultural association Teatro Praga (of which the author of this thesis project is the artistic director). Since the space was assigned to this association, following the trend of using vacant buildings for urban renewal purposes with cultural projects, it has been the subject of a requalification, a project led by the architects Artéria in a strict cooperation with the entity responsible for the management of the space. This is a project that aims at the same time for financial sustainability and impact, both in urban regeneration and socio-cultural development of populations as in stimulating the creation and development of new artistic languages.
