Lugares comuns, lugares esquecidos: fragmentos de arquitectura.

Abstract

Sintra and its mountain, with regard to the landscape, architecture and human settlement are revealed long as a whole, and since then, a unique cultural landscape in the country. This condition is based on a vast natural heritage and a strong, premature and permanent human occupation of this territory for several centuries and was the summer resort of the royal court and the preferred home area of second residence. This region suffered a major development in the transition period to the 1960s, when it was implemented the Master Plan of the Lisbon Region (PDRL ) in order to combine economic development in a planning model for the region. This plan projected, in the longer perspective, the structure of the Lisbon area by defining a set of essential public facilities and infrastructure, as well as several new pathways with a goal that went far beyond the city limits. Driven by the implementation of railways, dating from 1887, and the creation of IC19 (1985/1995), Lugares Comuns, Lugares Esquecidos, is a reflection on this territory that is Sintra, with the primary aim to understand the impact of these two major routes of transport in the development and transformation of the territory's image and landscape. From tracing the evolution of urban sprawl, also performed in this work, it was possible to identify a set of areas that over the years, were being absorbed in the great urban explosion the outskirts of Lisbon suffered. It is also from the drawing and photographic record that this essay focuses the eye on the various places that were forgotten in time, highlighting the enormous contrasts of cultures, ways of life as well as several construction seasons.
