Abstract

The literature reports the existence of negative beliefs associated with lower social class families, as well as the negative impact on psychological and physical health. However, there is no instrument that allows to access its social images, being unknown its content and potential impact. This study aims to validate an instrument that gives access to these images, and to understand the influence of sociodemographic variables of the respondents (gender, age, qualifications, have children, income) and social variables (values, trust in institutions, religious, political positioning) in the social image of lower social class families. To access the values we used the Scale of Human Values, which is a reduced version of the scale Portrait Values Scale (Schwartz, Melech, Lehmann, Burgess, Harris & Owens, 2001). The trust in institutions was measured through the Survey of Trust in Institutions (Vala, Cabral & Ramos, 2003). The sample consists of 225 participants, of which 157 are female and the average age is 37.51 years (SD = 12:59). The results show that the social image of these families is a multidimensional construct, constituted by the dimensions Functional Family, With Difficulties, With Features and Structured. The results also indicate that there exists a relation among the values and the dimensions of the social images of these families, being this relation sometimes moderated by the sociodemographic and social variables.
